About Us

Mission

The Bioregional OutReach Network - BORN- is a 501c3 non-profit organization whose mission is to catalyze sustainable progrss in the northern Rockies bioregion by establishing networks that connect people to people and people to place through open dialouge, arts, activism, education and events. Our endeavors celebrate community, independence, peacefulness and solutions. We strive to educate our community- including teachers and students of all ages - about sustainability by creating open dialogue about new ideas and approaches to age-old problems as well as looking ahead to ensure a healthy plant for generations to come. BORN values seeding and initiating projects which connect people-to-people and people-to-place. We value empowering individuals and the power of combining our strengths. We do not claim ownership of ideas but prefer to connect people in ways that enable them to act effectively for themselves. BORN vaules the ongoing insipration of the imagination within our community. We believe in regular re-connection of people and projects as a means of reigniting the passion for progress. We value the Bioneers Conference and plan to continue to develop our relationship with this national, visionary movement. We respect the the combination of national perspectives with local and regional action. check out more at www.bioneers.org

History

BORN took root in Bozeman, Montana in 2006. After four years of planning and creating The Northern Rockies Bioneers Conference(NRBC), founders Sam & Abby Porter felt it was time to create a non-profit organization that not only hosts the NRBC, but also several other ongoing projects. BORN was helped along the way by several community members and organizations. We would like to extend our thanks to BioRegions International, The Montana Community Foundation and New Priorities Foundation for their support of BORN from its infancy through today.

What is Bioneers?

Founder Kenny Ausubel coined the term Bioneers in 1990 to describe an emerging culture. Bioneers are social and scientific innovators from all walks of life and disciplines who have peered deep into the heart of living systems to understand how nature operates, and to mimic "nature's operating instructions" to serve human ends without harming the web of life. Nature's principles—kinship, cooperation, diversity, symbiosis and cycles of continuous creation absent of waste—can also serve as metaphoric guideposts for organizing an equitable, compassionate and democratic society.

Each October in San Rafael, CA, the Bioneers come together as a group of leading social and scientific innovators to share stories, present model solutions and network with each other.    To stimulate and enhance these efforts on a local level, Bioneers beams a simultaneous broadcast of the Conference plenary talks to some 20 sites around the country. Those local sites view the national speakers and produce their own workshops based on local/regional issues and organizing needs.

This year will be the 20th Anniversary of The Bioneers Conference to learn more about the national organization please visit The Bioneers at www.bioneers.org

2009 will be the 7th year Bozeman has been host to the Northern Rockies Bioneers Conference.  We are excited to be able to bring this amazing conference to our bioregion and, as always, look forward to the great gathering of presenters, activists, educators, children, and citizens to get inspired, to connect with one another and to create social change in our world.
